The Russian gaming industry continues to honor its heroes as voting begins for the next members of the Video Game Hall of Fame. This unique project, launched by the Russian Video Game Industry Development Organization (RVIDO), celebrates iconic games, outstanding developers, and other influential figures who have shaped the country's gaming landscape.
What is the Hall of Fame?
The Video Game Hall of Fame was established in 2023 to support significant projects and inspire new initiatives. It immortalizes the achievements of Russian developers, journalists, entrepreneurs, and esports athletes. Last year, the Hall inducted games that became symbols of their era: Tetris, Atomic Heart, and Space Rangers. In honor of Tetris, a monument is being planned for Moscow, currently under development as part of the Design Factory competition.
How Does the Voting Process Work?
The selection process involves several stages. First, the gaming community compiles a list of candidates, which is then narrowed down to shortlists by RVIDO experts. The final stage is public voting. In 2023, over 80,000 people participated in selecting new inductees.
This year, voting runs until December 20, 2024. Each authorized user can cast three votes in each of the following categories:
- “Legendary Video Games”
- “People Who Influenced the Industry”
- “Legendary Esports Athletes” (a new category introduced in 2024).
Who Are the 2024 Nominees?
The "Legendary Video Games" category includes popular titles like Cut the Rope, Heroes of Might and Magic, War Thunder, Rig'n'Roll, World of Tanks, Escape from Tarkov, and more.
In the "People Who Influenced the Industry" category, last year's honorees included Alexey Pajitnov (creator of Tetris), Sergey Suponev (TV host), Sergey Orlovsky (founder of Nival), and other key figures.
For the first time, the Hall has introduced a category for esports athletes in 2024. The shortlist features 13 individuals who have made significant contributions to Russian esports.
Why Does It Matter?
“The Video Game Hall of Fame is an opportunity to highlight the best projects and individuals in the industry. These people and their achievements serve as beacons for new generations of game creators. Adding the ‘Esports Athletes’ category emphasizes our leadership: Russia was the first country to officially recognize esports as a separate discipline.”
